Development Research PhD Workshop

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together PhD students working on development research. The workshop aims to facilitate the dialogue and interaction between young scholars on relevant development research topics in general, and their own PhD work in particular.

The workshop is primarily a platform for PhD students to present and discuss their own work. The program will allow time for both peer-to-peer discussions and feedback from senior scholars.

The Structure of the Workshop

The workshop will take place over two days, stating at 12.00 on October 23rd and ending at 15.00 on October 24th. The format for the two days will consists of several sessions with 3- 4 speakers per session, for a total of 15 speakers.

Each presenter will be allocated a total of 40 minutes for their draft, which includes the paper presentation, comments from a senior scholar and open floor discussion. As a guideline, each presenter should aim to keep their presentation to maximum 10-12 minutes, leaving 10 minutes to comments from a senior scholar, and 15 minutes for open floor discussion.

The Development Research School will provide lunch, dinner, and coffee breaks to all participants.

Submission of Drafts

The accepted applicants will be expected to submit a draft text ahead of the workshop, in early October. Drafts at any stage will be accepted, from early drafts to near-finished manuscripts. The word count of the submitted draft texts can be between 4000- 7000 words.

When submitting this text, the participants will be asked to indicate which aspect of the draft they would most like to get comments/feedback on, e.g., the research idea/question, the methodology, theoretical aspects, the write-up of the text, or other.

All participants will be expected to read at least three of the other participants’ drafts ahead of the workshop. The drafts and instructions which drafts to read will be circulated at least one week ahead of the workshop.

We aim to have a workshop with lively and insightful discussions, so do make sure to read your designated papers.
