Job Opportunity: Doctoral Student in Geography with an Emphasis on Human Geography in the Area of Urban Africa

Stockholm University is looking for a doctoral student at the research profile Urban Africa, at the Department of Human Geography. The application closes on 1st June 2023.

Subject Area for Doctoral Student Position

The Urban Africa group is one of the research profiles at the Department of Human Geography, Stockholm University. The group investigates the multi-faceted social, economic and political processes shaping urban life on the African continent. The research is attentive both to global processes and ideals and to the role played by highly diverse local actors. This includes exploring the myriad initiatives through which urban residents re-make cities from below, and the complex and shifting ways of governing life in the city. 

The group conducts research on a range of evolving themes including urban infrastructures, the politics of informal livelihoods, the processes and outcomes of housing policies, and the (re)making of public space. Drawing upon qualitative methods and diverse theoretical approaches, the research covers a variety of dimensions and processes such as socio-spatial transformation, the role of materiality and the multitude of experiences and urban imaginaries. Qualification requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere. 

For specific entry requirements, it is also required that you have read at least 90 credits in human geography or have another relevant background for the program. The language of supervision and seminars is either Swedish or English. Very good knowledge of Swedish or English is therefore required. For more information here.
